Shayaan Yar Khan at International Migrants Worker Day

Having volunteered at several community service events, I was eager to take on a leadership role and plan an event that may significantly benefit society. I got the opportunity when Big at Heart organization accepted my request to lead an event on International Migrants Worker Day to appreciate the hard work and contributions of migrant workers in our community.

Working closely with the Big at Heart team, I began brainstorming ideas to thank and entertain migrant workers through engaging activities, games, and rewards. At first, it was challenging to gather ideas and volunteers because this was my first time organizing an event. But one of my most important mentors, Ms. Nalini, trusted me and granted me total freedom to lead. Her encouragement of me drove me on.. Her belief in me motivated me to push forward.

After a lot of research, I decided to host a Pucket game—a fun, interactive activity that could entertain people of all ages and give the workers a stress-free day. While teaching the game rules and managing a large crowd caused challenges, volunteers and I made sure it was done right.

Two weeks in advance, we began designing striking posters to advertise the event and compiling gift bags for attendees. I was both anxious and thrilled on the event day. To my pleasure, the event started with great involvement and soon the mood changed to a family-like celebration full of laughter and happiness.

The best moment came when the Migrant Workers’ Centre (MWC) team unexpectedly called me on stage to share my experience and say a few words for the migrant workers. It was overwhelming yet fulfilling. Later, I got another surprise when I was invited to distribute awards to contest winners.

This event has become a memory I’ll cherish forever. Seeing the smiles of the workers gave me immense satisfaction. The Ministry of Manpower also appreciated my efforts, making me feel truly proud.

This encounter sharpened my organizing and leadership skills. I am now more motivated to keep helping Big at Heart to carry out their excellent work. I appreciate your believing in me, Ms. Nalini and the whole team!
